Moving from nursery to "big school" is a significant milestone. Your child is leaving the familiar, smaller setting they've known and stepping into something much bigger. Here's how to smooth the way.
Key Differences Between Nursery and School
| Nursery | School | |---------|--------| | Smaller groups | Larger class (up to 30) | | Flexible routine | Structured timetable | | Play-led learning | Play-based with more structure | | Key worker system | Class teacher + TA | | Naps available | No nap time | | Snack provided | Bring own snack/school meals |
Building School Readiness
School readiness isn't about reading and writing — it's about:
- Social skills: Sharing, taking turns, playing cooperatively
- Emotional regulation: Managing frustration, asking for help
- Self-care: Toileting, dressing, eating independently
- Listening skills: Following simple instructions, sitting still for short periods
- Confidence: Being comfortable away from parents
Practical Tips
The Summer Before School
- Read the school's welcome pack together
- Practise wearing the uniform (including shoes!)
- Visit the school playground at weekends
- Play "school" at home — sitting at a table, raising hands
- Arrange playdates with future classmates if possible
The Night Before
- Lay out uniform together
- Pack the bag with everything needed
- Read a calm bedtime story
- Reassure them: "You're going to have so much fun"
The First Morning
- Stay calm and positive (even if you're crying inside!)
- Keep the goodbye short and cheerful
- Don't sneak away — always say goodbye
- Tell them when you'll be back: "I'll be here at the gate at 3 o'clock"
It Gets Easier
The first week is the hardest — for you, not them! Most children settle remarkably quickly. By half term, school will feel like home.
If your child needs extra support during school holidays, our camps provide familiar routines, active play and plenty of new friends — a perfect bridge between terms.
